What Are You Stitching?

Zohra Parker

‘I stitched this framed piece ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent van Gogh for my son Zubair, at his request, as he loved the image so much. The intention was to depict brushstrokes of the painting. I had never done any needle painting before and didn’t know how I was going to get it to look like the painting.’

‘Initially he envisaged the image on his denim jacket.  However, on receiving the finished article, he was so overcome with joy and amazement that he decided that nothing less than framing the piece would be good enough! ‘Wow! Mom! How did you do this?’

I found it challenging, but a most rewarding project. Every stitch was worth his response!’

What a beautiful gift for your son, Zohra! Your stitches are wonderful and we recognised the influence right away. You’ve re-created the brushstrokes in stitch masterfully and we’re sure he will treasure the piece for many years to come. Stunning.

Lucy Byford

‘Having been on a trip to Greenland I decided that I would try to create an impression of some of the majestic scenery.’

‘Of course, it’s impossible to do it justice but it’s a fun reminder of our journey. It is stitched on a recycled table napkin with a single strand of cotton.’

A beautiful way to remember one’s journeys, Lucy! The composition certainly echoes the iconic images of Greenland and you’ve made excellent use of recycled material.

Ann Pocklington

‘I love mixing two hobbies – I often transfer a photo onto fabric and then stitch.’

‘I made a fabric collage, stitched into it, enhanced the saturation of a photograph of a back street in Verona, Italy, transferred that onto the collage and then stitched again! The photo is the fabric piece exhibited in Lyddington, UK.’

Ann, it’s amazing to hear about all the layers that have gone into your piece! The colour palette is especially intriguing, and we love how you’ve achieved compounding textures into some of the shapes.

Have you recreated art in stitch? Embroidered a piece inspired by a holiday? Or incorporated images into your stitching?
