Wood Anemones by Di van Niekerk
3rd February 2023
Di van Niekerk is famous for creating stunning ribbon embroidery pieces. In this design, Di has skilfully embellished an existing painting by artist Anne Cotterill and brought it to life by adding dimension and form with her own range of hand-dyed, variegated silk threads.
Here are some facts:

Designer: Di van Niekerk from South Africa
Project Name: Wood Anemones
Project Type: Framed Embroidery

Original Artwork: Design for printed panel created by Anne Cotterill
Wood anemones, also known as the windflower, are a species of wildflower that can be found growing in dappled shade in their natural habitat of ancient woodlands. The flowers range in colour and bloom in spring and summer.
One of the specific wonder points we really enjoy about this project is how Di has converted the jug holding the posies into a 3D element by cutting it out as a separate piece of fabric and elevating it off the ground fabric by adding padding underneath.
The final result is a spectacular arrangements of gorgeous ribbon flowers, softly shaded with delicate pinks and greens, that feel as if they have been freshly cut from the garden.
Special Note – to create your own Wood Anemones as it originally appears in the book A Passion for Needlework 4 | The Whitehouse Daylesford, you can either purchase the printed fabric panels available HERE or buy one of our Ready-to-Stitch kits (see below).
