Worked around the central cross stitch pansy motif are borders of double four-sided stitch, Scotch stitch, a satin stitch variation and eyelet stitch.

The back of the etui is worked in a similar manner around the maker’s initials. Stitched onto lilac evenweave linen, the etui is lined with lavender silk and uses a combination of solid colour and variegated threads and ribbons.
