The essential accessory to a beautiful smocked dress is a simple petticoat. Here are three versatile and comfortable styles to suit most dresses.

The first is a pull-on dropwaist style with a bodice in soft cotton lycra.

The second is a similar style, with the skirt attached to a purchased singlet or vest.

The third petticoat is a waisted style trimmed with pretty broderie anglaise.

Easy-care polycotton lawn is gathered into two or three tiers for the skirt, depending on the required fullness. Add special touches such as ribbon trim around the hem and a little embroidery at the neckline.
