More about this digital file
Description
Borrowing from Elizabethan embroidery, the sinuous curls used in both monochrome and polychrome embroidery of that period are used to frame a single eglantine rose and a spray of glistening berries.
Known commonly as sweet briar, this wild rose is native to Europe and grows freely by the roadside in hedgerows where it is often accompanied by blackberries, providing both food and fragrance.
Softly shaded petals surround the flower centres while the berries are worked with a profusion of French knots, all with stranded cotton onto white linen.
