What Are You Stitching?

29TH MAY 2026 - ASU #527

Suzan Butyn

‘This embroidery piece is a tea towel with a couple of incorporated designs that were transferred and then stitched. Water colour paint was added as a design element.’

What a terrific addition to your kitchen, Suzan. The mix of water colour with embroidered plants has created a beautiful landscape and the addition of that gorgeous fishing frog and hovering dragonfly bring a touch of fun and whimsy. Keep up the excellent work.

Beth Pansino

‘I stitched this lovely Beetle Brooch and finished it during a two-day class Alison Cole taught in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) last year at the EGA national seminar.’

This is a beautiful brooch, Beth - the intricacy of the design and the quality of the finish are very impressive. Alison is a wonderful teacher, and you are clearly a wonderful stitcher! Congratulations on your well-deserved first place ribbon.

Madhulika Desai

‘I have just finished another embroidery project and would like to share it. This is a mixed media project, where I painted the background scene before embroidering the scene.

Featured here is a Gulmohar (as it is called in India) or Flame tree. This is my favourite tree for its sheer vibrancy and lovely, cool shade.’

‘Under this tree are an old man and a dog, sleeping peacefully. Both are homeless wanderers, who possess nothing and belong nowhere, which is why perhaps they are so peaceful.

I wanted to bring out this juxtaposition of lively reds and sedated greys and browns through this project. Working on this has been a meditative experience.’

Wow, Madhulika, what a gorgeous piece. The mix of paint and stitching does indeed create a beautiful scene and your use of muted colours against the vibrancy of the red tree is eye-catching. Your inspiration behind this project is wonderful to read about; thank you for sharing this with us.

Have you stitched a design that incorporates both paint and embroidery? Has one of your projects won a ribbon or an award? Or do you take inspiration for your designs from the world around you?
