‘I have been doing needle painting for 10 years. I have done some of Hazel Blomkamp’s designs and some of my other needle painting is based on photographs and works of great painters such as Vincent Van Gogh and Kandinsky. It is a real pleasure to embroider.’

Elisabeth, looking at all the amazing pieces you have stitched it is clear how much time and practise you have dedicated to your art. Your pieces are vibrant and eye-catching, and we are thrilled you chose to share them with us; keep up the terrific work.

Sandra Gascoigne

‘I have recently finished a piece of work that combines both of my passions, paint and stitch. I am now in my seventies and have just reached a point where I feel confident to 'do my own thing'.

For years, I have been commissioned to do artwork, cartoon life stories on paper. The stress of commissions really got to me last year, so I retired from accepting them, and now at last I am free to experiment with using both my favourite mediums together on fabric, in my own way.

Now I am confident that I have found my own 'thing'. I don't use patterns or copy other people’s work. Now I am confident that I have found my own 'thing'. I don't use patterns or copy other people’s work.

I love to build an idea from scratch, try and fail, try again.’

‘The above image is my latest piece. I started outdoors directly with needle and thread onto a hoop stretched with calico, whilst sitting in a garden in front of the subject. I then took a photograph and finished the work at home. I am happy with the outcome and will be continuing to add pieces to this series.’

What an inspiring story, Sandra, and a wonderful testament to the fact that it’s never too late to step into your confidence and follow your passions. Your piece is elegant and beautiful, and your passion shines through your work. We second this being ‘your thing’ and hope you continue for many years to come.

‘With great enthusiasm I dived into the project Poinsettia Heart engulfed in burgundy silk - the splash of a thousand tiny glass beads flying to the sky, triumphant in their freedom!’

‘And then they fell - shimmering and scattering - bouncing chaotically, rolling, ricocheting off baseboards and hiding under furniture.

Yet finally they found their rhythm, each one quietly lying on the bed of silk.

It was frustrating stitching the adorable heart, but along the way I developed a strong appreciation for your team. It was hard enough, but if I had to source the material and beads, forget it.

So, here's to the team who diligently assemble kits. How many beads, thread, needles? How they all keep it together for us stitchers to create… Thank you!’

Your words are both incredibly kind and incredibly true, Ann – we owe a LOT to our wonderful team who meticulously assemble each of our Ready-to-Stitch kits! Your persistence is impressive, and your Poinsettia Heart is beautiful. We hope it serves as a reminder to continue pushing through challenges for a beautiful ending.

Have you stitched a design inspired by a famous artist? Do you enjoy designing and creating pieces for your very own series? Or have you persisted through a difficult project, all made worth it by the end result?

Whatever you are stitching, we’d love to see it! Email photos of what you’ve created with needle and thread along with a few details about your stitching journey to news@inspirationsstudios.com
