What Are You Stitching?

‘I stitched a memorial piece for my best friend of 50+ years of her dog Alfie who sadly went over the rainbow bridge last year. I also lost my eldest dog Mickey of 14 years in March, so I’ll be stitching him very soon. I hope you like him.’
‘I love your magazine and have a few projects prepped ready to stitch when I finish my current projects.’
Kim, your memorial piece for Alfie is a beautiful way to honour the love and memories shared with your best friend’s companion. We’re so sorry to hear of your recent loss of Mickey as well. Stitching can be such a comforting way to process grief, and we’re sure your piece for Mickey will be just as touching. Wonderful resemblance of Alfie by the way, you have a great skill in re-creating a photo in stitch.

‘Here is some of my three-dimensional stitching that I made some years ago. The first is a sprig of ivy growing out of a dry-stone wall. The stones are in fact needle felted wool which are painted with artist’s gesso and acrylic paint and then embroidered with ‘lichen’.’
‘The second is a rock pool that I started at a workshop given by Kay Dennis a few years ago.
I’ve also attached a mainly felted 3D sculpture that does have a lot of stitching in it. It is of bracket fungi on a tree stump, but they are in a magical place, the stump is so full of magic that it is smoking out of various crevices, and it houses not only the bracket fungus male voice choir, but also some odd creatures whose eyes can be seen peering out.’
‘At one time there was a large fungal hand appearing out of the top conducting the choir, but it died!’
Ann, thank you for sharing your incredible three-dimensional stitching with us and for letting us peek into your enchanted stitched world! We love your combinations of needle-felted wool, paint, and embroidery to create such a tactile effect. Your work brings together skilled craftsmanship and a wonderful sense of whimsy. Well done!
Have you stitched a design in memory of a beloved pet? Do you enjoy three-dimensional projects? Or have you created any curious creatures peering out of tree stumps?
Whatever you are stitching, we’d love to see it! Email photos of what you’ve created with needle and thread along with a few details about your stitching journey to news@inspirationsstudios.com
