Sunflowers by Louise Spriggs

12TH SEPTEMBER 2025 - ASU #493

There is just something irresistible about sunflowers - bold, cheerful, and larger than life.

In her project, Louise Spriggs has captured the essence of this much-loved bloom and transformed it into a charming, embroidered box that is as practical as it is beautiful.

On the lid, a glorious stumpwork sunflower takes centre stage with each raised petal stitched and shaped individually, giving the flower a natural, lifelike appearance.

Ladybirds scamper across the design, playfully linking the raised embroidery above with the surface embroidery decorating the sides of the box below.

Louise has achieved a clever blend of 2D and 3D techniques to give the whole piece both depth and cohesion.

We’re often asked to rate the level of difficulty for a particular project, or to recommend something for beginners.

It’s always tricky to answer, as there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to skill levels. Everyone brings different strengths and experiences to their stitching.

This speaks to the incredible depth of needlework as an art form. Its reach is so vast that fixed parameters like ‘beginner’ or ‘advanced’ rarely do it justice.

And this is just one of the many reasons why needlework is so compelling and enthralling - it’s a passionate pursuit that knows no end.

Our best advice when it comes to giving a project such as Sunflowers a difficulty level is to call this one ‘wonderfully approachable’.

By that we mean, when you consider that most of the box is worked in stem stitch - one of the most familiar and easy-to-learn stitches there is - there’s a good proportion of the project that appeals to both beginners and seasoned stitchers.

And for those newer to needlework, Sunflowers provides an excellent opportunity to upskill by trying some beginner-friendly stumpwork elements with the detached petals on the lid.

Once you see the reward of your efforts in bringing the sunflower to life through raised elements, you’ll be hooked.

Measuring 12cm x 9cm wide (4 ¾” x 3 ½”), the finished box is practical and has endless uses. It’s ideal for needlework notions and bobbins, keepsakes, or jewellery - or even as a striking addition to your hall stand for keeping keys close at hand.

With its sunny personality, thoughtful design details, and just the right balance of challenge and familiarity, Sunflowers is one of those projects that will leave you smiling long after you finish it.

It’s destined to brighten your home while showcasing your needlework skills for all to admire.

Ready-to- Stitch kits are now available and include everything you need to create your very own Sunflowers box, including printed instructions, making this project the perfect gift for anyone in your life interested in learning needlework.
