Jonquil Pot by Ana Mallah

As a civilization, to help us explain something we sometimes make up a new word because all the existing words in the dictionary are somehow inadequate.
For example, one day it was decided that if you’re feeling angry because you’re hungry, this phenomenon should be called hangry and a new word was born.
Or if you’re going camping but doing it in style, it was agreed that this activity should have a new, elevated name and the word glamping was created.
We suspect a similar thing happened when an English speaking someone in the 17th century came across the most divine yellow flower and when told by the French it was called a Jonquille, they decided to make up their own version of the word and simply called it a Jonquil.
But we’re not surprised – if you were to see a Jonquil for the first time and were searching to describe just how petite, how dainty and how magnificence this flower is, you’d just probably modify the French word as well!
Fortunately for Ana Mallah, she didn’t need to worry about the name of the flower she chose for her glorious handmade pot, instead she focused on designing and stitching the most wonderfully joyous bunch of golden florals you’re ever likely to see.
The project Jonquil Pot from Ana’s new book In Bloom is sublime.
14 glorious stumpwork jonquils are worked onto the lid of a small, handmade pot stitched using stranded silk and cotton threads with each group of wired petals surrounding a perfectly ruffled trumpet.
It’s hard not to be completely smitten with this little cutie and no doubt many of us have already decided the exact perfect spot in our home that this highly coveted piece would live.
Inside the book In Bloom you’ll find wonderfully detailed step-by-step instructions for every element from stitching the jonquils, the leaves and the ridges on the side of the pot, through to construction and finishing.
Ready-to-Stich kits are also available and just a reminder you’ll need a copy of the book for the instructions, which is sold separately.
Once you’ve finished your magnificent Jonquil Pot, you might even be moved to make up your own word to better describe how it makes you feel… Jonpotmazing!? Maybe we best leave that to the experts while we focus on what do best - stitch!
