ISSUE 7   |   July 24, 2015

Hi <<First Name>>,

When putting together this week’s issue of Embroidery News, we came across a little dilemma… we have waaay too much content to fit in one issue.

After exhibiting at The Adelaide Sewing Stitching and Hand Craft Show, we met so many friends and supporters of Inspirations that we could fill an entire issue sharing their great stories and the photos that we took. We’ll have to come back to that next week and condense it down for you, but thank you to everyone who came to see us, we had a great time. For now you’ll just have to be content with an update from Susan, more of the always fabulous ‘What Are You Stitching’ and an important event coming up next week that we should all be a part of.

In the meantime, please keep sending in your stories, photos and feedback (good or bad!) we love hearing from you.

KEEPING UP WITH SUSAN

This week Susan writes to us while travelling through the USA:

‘I have been spending the first part of my trip in the Seattle area and I'm very glad to be enjoying the summer weather! Travelling to new places is always fun but when you discover a fabulous needlework shop things get really exciting. I had the good fortune to visit the wonderful Threadneedle Street in Issaquah and the shop is packed to the rafters with an amazing range of threads and stitching accessories.

Run by the delightful Denise Davis, Threadneedle Street is an Aladdin's cave of needlework treasures and Denise has everything wonderfully organised so that finding things is a breeze. Everywhere you look there are threads - from the more commonplace such as DMC to a full range of Au Ver a Soie threads to some of the more obscure such as gilt sylke twist and silk wrapped pearl purl - you name it and Denise has got it.

The more you look the more you find. One could easily spend several hours just looking at the threads but then there are the fabrics, books, hoops and frames, and other needlework accessories - just make sure you have enough room in your suitcase if you are travelling like me. Denise has a thriving mail order business and you can contact her at custservice@threadneedlestreet.com and she will pop what you need into the mail.

While I was there Denise brought out a magnificent 17th century man's waistcoat that she has acquired and we spent quite a bit of time looking at the beautiful embroidery that covered the front of the garment - what a treat!

Threadneedle Street is at 485 Front Street North, Suite B, Issaquah, Washington Tel +1 (425) 3910528 and the web address is

WHAT ARE YOU STITCHING?

Got an old pair of jeans you’re thinking about throwing out? DON’T! There’s a new embroidery craze you might want to get into that Shelley Diane from the USA has started:

“I turned an old pair of jeans into a pillow! My Blackwork beaded frog pillow is created with beads and metallic threads done in blackwork. I started this project over 10 years ago and finally finished it to enter into the 2015 Sonoma County Fair. Wish me luck!”

GOOD LUCK SHELLY! We look forward to hearing how your Frog Pillow goes at the fair.

Kathleen Van Orsdel from Talbott, Tennessee USA has sent in "Ascending Hawk" a hand embroidery project from Urban Threads design and White Willow Stitching original called "Tribal Bat" which is cross stitch throughout.

More about “Tribal Bat” from Kathleen:

The counting in the ‘Tribal Bat’ piece was particularly challenging all throughout the 4 pages of charting! It is totally in white on a charcoal background and I added the verbiage in case people didn’t recognise it as a bat!  As an aside, I wear a bat magnet on my blouse almost every day - beautiful animals.

Well it’s not often we see an embroidered bat, so for fans of the Chiroptera species - today is your lucky day!  Thank you Kathleen.

Malta is a gorgeous island country just south of Italy. Judging by this beautiful project Rita Mifsud sent in, living in Malta provides some amazing inspiration for Embroidery.

During a recent embroidery course Rita attended, using her own design she stitched these delightful curtain tie backs.

And now for something completely different… Kathleen Klein from Michigan USA is what one may call a serious ‘Multi-Crafter’ and belongs to several Facebook groups including Crazy Quilt Divas; Crazy Quilt International and Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery just to name a few. Kathleen shares a little about how these unique and striking projects came to life:

“The designer Annette Graves drew up the original mermaid and sea serpent for me and then I designed everything else including modifying the sea serpent to fit my steampunk ideas. Some of the members suggested that I send you photos, hope you like them.”

To view more of Kathleen’s work you can visit her Facebook page here

What are you stitching?

OFFICE UPDATE

As mentioned earlier, Inspirations exhibited at a local craft fair over the weekend and last week we showed you some of the projects Kristian’s Auntie Sharon had created from our magazine ‘Stitch Craft Create AU/NZ’. Ansie van der Walt, editor of SCC AU/NZ magazine, also came to the rescue and she crafted together this snuggly crocheted neck cowl for us to display at the fair, as featured in the current issue 03. For the perfect finishing touch, Ansie used these amazing buttons from this terrific new supplier we found Buttontopia. You can check out their exquisite button range online http://buttontopia.com.au/.

Thanks for your help Ansie… not only did the neck cowl look sensational, it was so cold at the fair one day, we were going to take it in turns wearing it!

To purchase a copy of this project, you can buy Stitch Craft Create AU/NZ Issue 03 online here: www.stitchcraftcreate.com.au

A Red Letter Day For Your Calendar - July 30th

Did you know there is annual day set aside to celebrate Embroidery? Fittingly it’s called ‘World Embroidery Day’ and is held on July 30th. Now if this is news to you, don’t feel bad – it is only a relatively new initiative but definitely worth knowing about, so to bring everyone up to speed on World Embroidery Day, we have prepared the following article:

In 2011 a local group belonging to ‘Broderiakademin’ which translated from Swedish to English means ‘Embroidery Academy’ or otherwise known as  ‘Sweden's Embroidery Guild’, took the initiative to plan and create a special day with the sole purpose to celebrate embroidery… and so it was ‘World Embroidery Day’ was born.

Now celebrated annually, the inaugural World Embroidery Day took place in Sweden on July 30th July 2011. It was such an occasion the Swedish Guild created a rather inspiring ‘World Embroidery Day’ manifesto which you can download and read here.

The key message from the manifesto is :

“The importance of embroidery must be made known and World Embroidery Day will spread around the world. Make 30th July a day filled with creativity for the sake of Peace, Freedom and Equality.”

Since its inception, World Embroidery Day has caught the imagination of stitchers everywhere to the point that the organisation All One Thread Global Embroidery Network has a goal this year to receive photos from communities celebrating the event from over 20 different countries.

It certainly is exciting to see a small yet passionate group of stitchers with a big dream, be bold enough to initiate such an event which now, 5 years on, is continuing to grow globally.

Kudos to the Swedes for making it happen, we all celebrate the notion of encouraging more people to embroider, so the Swedes definitely have our support here at Inspirations.

Therefore the next question is – what should one do on World Embroidery Day?

Lucky for us the Embroiderers’ Guild of the ACT in Australia emailed the Swedish Guild to ask that exact same question and here is their reply:

‘On World Embroidery we all go to cafes and stitch! We hope that all who appreciate embroidery want to help celebrate the day - great or small, public or home!’

So next Thursday, we’ve all been tasked with celebrating ‘World Embroidery Day’ by taking up our needles and stitching... for the lucky among us this would mean every day is World Embroidery Day, but for the rest of us perhaps an extra special effort is required. While we are at it, let’s post something on the social media platform of your choice and use World Embroidery Day as a terrific opportunity to spread the word about our magnificent craft.

We leave you with a quote from Swedish Craft Blogger iHanna:

'July 30 is always World Embroidery Day – a day when we celebrate the slowness of stitching and enjoy the company of needle, fabric and thread.'
