Welcome to EN 66.  It’s time to Rejoice!  If this crazy world sometimes leaves you a bit flat and at times lacking joy, we have the perfect remedy for you! Inspiration issue #92 has been released this week and its theme is Rejoice!  We’re probably all familiar with the saying ‘To Whom Much is Given, Much is Expected’ (Luke 12:48) and it’s probably fair to say the world would benefit from a jolly good cheering up about now!  And who better to do it than we stitchers!? We have the unique gift of bringing beautiful creations to life using our needles and threads, and all of us will have our own testimony of how we made a difference in someone’s life through our needlework. Whether it be the gift of a project we have created for them, inviting them to join a stitch and chat group, visiting and helping them with a current project they have on the go, or even just contacting someone to encourage them to make time for more stitching, we really have a magnificent opportunity to create a difference in this world. So Rejoice with us, not only because it’s the beginning of the festive season, but Rejoice in the tangible and practical gift we’ve been given to light up the world one stitch at a time.

Inspirations issue #92 is our 2016 Christmas Spectacular edition aptly named Rejoice!  With a perfect blend of projects to help you celebrate Christmas as well as something for all year around, there is a lot of joy and rejoicing jumping off each page.

After deliberating as to which project we would feature from issue #92 first, we settled on ‘Double Delight’ by Jennifer Kennedy.   Not only can you not go wrong with a project named ‘Double Delight’ it’s also a project you can start today and have finished in time for Christmas.

However there is another reason that makes this project particularly special… it will forever be included in the Inspirations hall of fame as the first time we have ever published a pulled thread technique piece.

First up, let’s answer the question – what exactly is pulled thread?

Pulled thread work creates patterns in the fabric, distorting the fabric threads by pulling them in different directions with the stitches.   Wave stitches and their variations create wavy patterns with vertical and, sometimes, horizontal stitches. As a general rule, if the vertical stitch is straight it is pulled so that it will sit at an angle and if it is placed at an angle, it will be pulled so that it sits straight.

There is so much to like about these stockings, the style is what we might refer to as ‘rustic elegance’ where the combination of hessian fabric and perlé cotton threads make for an unusual, yet striking pairing.  Modern and traditional at the same time.

While Jennifer has worked her stockings onto natural hessian and embellished them with pearl beads and woven satin ribbons, the design lends itself nicely to adding your own creative variation. 

Each stocking is lined and backed with white taffeta and hangs from a fabric loop.  The large stocking measures 28.5cm x 17.5cm wide (11 1/4" x 6 7/8") with the small one 19.5cm tall x 12.5cm wide (7 3/4" x 5").

One of the many wonders of modern technology (when it actually works properly!) is being able to converse with someone in another language without actually learning any new skills other than how to use a website like Google Translator or Babble Fish.  If you have never tried is, here is an email we received in French from Jo Dessy:

‘Voici mon premier ouvrage en Hardanger terminé après 9 mois de "travail".  Ce fut un véritable plaisir que de broder cette nappe en Hardanger. Premier ouvrage mais certainement pas le dernier.’

Here is the translation:

Here is my first piece in Hardanger finished after 9 months of "work".  It was a real pleasure to embroider this Hardanger tablecloth and is my first piece but certainly not the last!  Jo

To celebrate the inclusion of the technique of pulled thread for the first time in Inspirations, here is a project Françoise Koenig from France sent in to share:

Dear Inspirations,  This is what kept me busy this last hot summer. It started with an urge to do some pulled thread embroidery, but then what would I do with the embroidered square? I remembered that I had some pojagi fabrics which a friend brought me back from a vacation in South Korea two years ago. At last I braided four braids using kumihimo technique for the corners.

Over 4,000 tiny hand stitches later (that is an estimation for just the pojagi part), I'm rather pleased with the result and proud to show it to you.  I live in a small town in the suburbs of Grenoble in the south of France. I'm 59 and I quit working as a webmaster three years ago. I enjoy doing all sorts of needlework : embroidery, cross stitch, quilting, basic dress making, knitting, crochet.  Wishing you a nice weekend, Françoise Koenig
