Welcome to EN 64.  This week without deliberately planning anything, we have a floral theme running through the newsletter, which is rather serendipitous seeing as our feature project is the Elizabethan floral beauty ‘Serendipity’ from our new book A Passion For Needlework.  Now just before you enjoy EN 64 and all the floral needlework splendour that awaits, we have an important notice for you… Our international needlework convention ‘Beating Around The Bush’ starts next week which means we’ll all be flat out stitching and therefore Embroidery News will be taking a break for the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow is October and that means, it’s time to turn the page on the Inspirations 2016/2017 Calendar.

The project featured for the month of October is ‘Sweet Violets’ by Susan Porter from Inspirations issue #82.  Was it serendipitous that ‘Sweet Violets’ is also the same project chosen to theme BATB 2016 held in October? 

Rather deliberate decision actually to celebrate both this wonderful event and the superb needlework of Susan Porter.

This divine stumpwork embroidery will have your fingers itching to pick a perfect bloom. Worked onto a background of ivory duchess satin with stranded cotton threads, the vibrant avocado green leaves and stems contrast beautifully with the soft violet flowers to create a fabulously lifelike study.

We’re featuring another project from our new book ‘A Passion For Needlework’ this week and this one is by our very own Inspirations Magazine Editor- In-Chief Susan O’Connor called ‘Serendipity’.

Exquisite wheels of shimmering ivory silk stitched with winding stems, glowing fruit and dainty blooms of pink eglantine, heartsease, sky blue cornflowers and luscious, red strawberries, studded with slender, glass-head pins.

‘Serendipity’ is a true classic Susan O’Connor project in every way as it features her great love Elizabethan flowers and showcases her intricate needlework and relentless attention to detail.  Yet ‘Serendipity’ is not at all a daunting project to tackle for yourself as it is very manageable in both scale and complexity.

For anyone who enjoys Elizabethan flowers, the book ‘A Passion for Needlework’ offer up a double treat as it not only features ‘Serendipity’, it also includes Susan’s masterpiece ‘David Smyth’s Garden’ which we’ll look at another time.

‘Serendipity’ is a matching pair of pin wheels, one adorned with Rose and Heartsease and the other with Strawberry and Cornflower.  When asked about her love of Elizabethan flowers, Susan, an avid student of history, quickly regales fascinating facts of this period in time and how the Elizabethan period symbolises the shift in English sensibilities from flowers being used only for medicinal or nourishment purposes, to an awakening of their beauty and growing them purely for pleasure, which led to gardening for leisure as we know it today.

While we’re on the subject of history, the project ‘Serendipity’ includes a little of the history of the humble pin, which in itself has a fascinating story, and like many things in our modern world is today taken for granted, yet prior to 1824 a pin was not so easy to come by.  

When all is said and done however, the true wonderment here is these gorgeous pinwheels which can either offer you extravagantly beautiful housing for your pins, or some of the finest Elizabethan ornaments for your sewing room.

Special mention to Fiona Fagan who did an outstanding job sourcing the most divine antique French needlework accessories for the photography of ‘Serendipity’.  Her sensibility and creative mastery in styling some of the projects in ‘A Passion For Needlework’ is in no small way one of the reasons this is the world’s most beautiful needlework book.  We love your work Fiona!

Hello everyone, recently I was so pleased to see my interpretation of the swallows from the issue #89 project Les Hirondelles by Catherine Laurençon appearing in Embroidery News #57.  Another piece I have recently finished is from a design by Jocelyne Kurc, Meilleur Ouvrier de France, also using thread painting.  I embroidered the "Nigelle de Damas." Which is a symphony in blue and had a lot of fun stitching it.  I hope you like it.  I send you my best thoughts from France, Amansie. amansie.canalblog.com

Hi! My name is Leta Hunter from Wellington, New Zealand.  I am married with two grown up children and three grandchildren and have been retired now for three years.  I have done various types of embroidery starting with cross stitch, then had some classes in silk ribbon embroidery and Hardanger, am self-taught in stumpwork and crewel work, which I most prefer.

My biggest project was ‘Home Sweet Home’ by Carolyn Pearce which I worked with another embroidery friend, pleased I did because it was a big project. I have worked ‘Crewel Twists’ by Hazel Blomkamp, have been working on the Embroidered miniature quilt by Helen Marshall, and am finding it a real test of my skills. I had never done Needle Painting before and have always wanted to as I enjoy doing long and short stitch so when I saw the Red Fox by Tanja Berlin just had to do it.

My first attempt at Gold Work was an Illuminated “S” and thoroughly enjoyed that challenge, from that I went to the Stumpwork study of “Clematis” by Alison Cole from Inspirations issue #78 of which I am really proud.   I really enjoy Inspirations Magazine and recently purchased the Modern Crewel Kit – so much to do so little time!!  Regards Leta Hunter.'
