ISSUE 50  |  June 24, 2016

Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome to Embroidery News Issue 50.

This week we’re celebrating 50 issues of Embroidery News and to mark the milestone we’re departing from our regular programming and taking a moment to look back over the 49 issues and share some EN highlights.

From the most popular projects submitted for ‘What Are You Stitching’, to most frequently asked questions in ‘Can You Help’ even we have been fascinated to discover some of the trending topics of interest.

As always THANK YOU for supporting Inspirations and making this weekly email newsletter possible.

It’s only because of your participation via emails and photos along with your financial support through buying our magazines, books, patterns etc. that we get to serve the stitching community with the World’s Most Beautiful Needlework.

Do you have something to share?  We’d love to hear from you!  Email us at embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au.

EN TURNS 50

A weekly email about needlework is not a new idea and in fact Inspirations has been publishing one for many years originally known as the ‘Country Bumpkin Web letter’.  Last year the newsletter enjoyed a significant makeover and was renamed ‘Embroidery News’, taking on a fresh, new format, change of editorial content and was super-sized in length.  It was, and continues to be, a lot more work for us to create, however our vision to publish the world’s most beautiful weekly needlework newsletter has proven to be a great success.

Along the way we also launched our new website www.stitchology.com.au with the goal to liberate our vast back catalogue of projects, magazines and books and make it easier for everyone to access this timeless content.  We continue to add new products each week and have some big plans for all our websites in the coming months so stay tuned for details.

In the meantime, here are some fun facts about what was popular online and featured in Embroidery News issue 01-49:

BENEFITS OF NEEDLEWORK

Although this segment in Embroidery News only began in Issue #34, it has touched us all with the honesty and depth of emotion that has been expressed by those who have so openly shared about how needlework has benefited their life. It has made us, and no doubt you, reflect on how needlework has impacted our own lives and perhaps given us the resolve to find the time to immerse in an activity with benefits much further and wider in reach than we’d initially realised.

To celebrate Issue 50 of Embroidery News, we share a timeless benefit of needlework that Estelle Farwell from Encounter Bay in South Australia brought to our attention . . .

‘Another argument for busying good women in the works of fancy is, because it takes them off from scandal, the usual attendant of tea tables and other inactive scenes of life . . . A third reason I shall mention is the profit that is brought to the family when theses pretty arts are encouraged. It is manifest that this way of life not only keeps fair ladies from running out into expenses but is at the same time an actual improvement.’
- From The Art of Needle-work from the Earliest Ages by The Countess of Wilton (1840)

Over the coming issues of Embroidery News we’ll continue to share how members of the Embroidery News Community have benefited from ‘works of fancy’, but if you have a story of how needlework has impacted your life, we’d love to hear from you at embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au.

KEEPING UP WITH SUSAN

The last time we posted an update about our Inspirations Editor In Chief extraordinaire Susan O’Connor was way back in EN 19, so we have to admit we’ve done a pretty bad job keeping up with her!  We shall redouble our efforts in the future, but for now here is what we know:

Susan in studio for an Inspirations photo shoot

Currently Susan is putting the final touches on Inspirations issue #92 which is our Christmas 2016 extravaganza due out in late October.  Plus, she is overseeing the much awaited reprint of the book ‘Home Sweet Home’ by Carolyn Pearce as well as stitching a new piece for a secret project coming out in September.  Recently Susan and Ellaine met Brandon Mably & Kaffe Fassett at the King Of Colour lectures we hosted earlier this year, which was a sensational night for all who attended.

Susan also reminded us about her super exciting trip to the UK coming up in August, where she will be experiencing the ultimate needlework indulgence of attending a 5 day stumpwork class with Jenny Adin-Christie. We look forward to seeing and hearing all about that in future Keeping Up With Susan updates.

BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES

In any given 12-month period you will inevitably come across a birth, death or marriage, for EN it’s been a case of one of each. We mourned the death of our close friend and colleague Andrew Dunbar in EN 16, who was the Inspirations photographer responsible for all the amazing imagery seen in the magazine from issue 1 through to 88.

Then we celebrated the marriage of Marc and Nadine Roger from the Alpine Experience in EN 24 and finally in EN 40 we announced the arrival of our creative director/stylist Fiona Fagan’s daughter Adeline Frances born 10th of April.

EN had the pleasure of joining the Fagan family just this weekend gone for Adeline’s Christening. Adelines gown is a family heirloom made by her Grandmother and worn by all the Fagan daughters including Fiona and even her nieces.  Made from material taken from Grandma's wedding dress, it was a proud moment for Adeline to continue the tradition.

We have even been spoiled by having Adeline attend a photo shoot or two, with Fiona able to add the magic touches to each shot all the while rocking the baby sling like a pro.

INSPIRATIONS – THE ISSUES

EN 01 – 49 has featured over 45 of the World’s Most Beautiful Needlework projects from Inspirations from 86 through 90.  We were treated to some astonishing projects from leading needle artisans who continually push the boundaries of creativity, technique and beauty to ensure we were spoiled for choice.

NEEDLEWORK NEWS

There is always so much happening around the world in our needlework community, it’s hard to keep up with it all.  From Nicola Jarvis turning 50, Hazel Blomkamp’s beloved dog giving birth right through to 5,000+ woollen crochet poppies being worked to commemorate the Australian ANZAC Centenary - there is never a dull moment.

One event that really struck a chord with us all is World Embroidery Day and last year we had an amazing response with reports coming in from far and wide letting us know what everyone got up to.  Don’t forget it’s coming up again soon - July 30th so we’ll count us down and look forward to once again hearing the fabulous stories of how stitching together makes the world a better place.

A special mention goes to our piece on Elza Bester and her astonishing needlework eye from EN 29.  This project really captured all our imaginations and left us hungry for more stitching brilliance.

WHAT ARE YOU STITCHING

Who knew you were all so clever?  We did of course! It happens countless times.  You tell us you saw a project in Inspirations, it captured your imagination but you never thought you had the skill to make it yourself.

Guess what?  You mustered the courage, purchased a kit, followed the step by steps and when needed, asked for help and just like a boss, you did what you never through you could do and created something fabulous, beautiful and magnificent.  All with just your needle and thread!

That is what Inspirations is all about inspiring you to push yourself out of your comfort zone and achieve brilliance. And it happens time, and time and time again.  Here’s the proof:

Since EN issue 01 we have published over 260 of your projects.  From your first attempt at a new technique to mastering a complex project as a special gift for a loved one.  These are just some of the projects you have shared with us all:

Christmas decorations, Threadpainted landscapes, Baby blankets, Ring cushions, Hand bags, Smocked Dresses, Easter eggs, Steampunk and Crazy Quilting, Brooches, Cushions, Butterflies, Birds, Elephants, Frogs, Wombats, Wolves, Bunnies, Lizards Dogs, (no cats interestingly!) Table runners, Placemats, Napkins, Children books, Clocks, Jeans, Quilts, iPad covers, Pin cushions, Hussifs, Etuis, Bears, Koalas, Flowers, Bees, Strawberries, Ladybirds and even a Virus plus much, much more.

So congratulations on all the outstanding needlework shared to date and please keep sending in your projects so the joy of stitching can be enjoyed by all.

CAN YOU HELP?

You may have heard us say that we love being part of such an engaged and generous community. Well, looking back over the last 49 issues of Embroidery News has definitely helped cement that feeling in us all! We’ve started many conversations in Can You Help? and have been overwhelmed by the generosity of time our community have given to join in on these conversations and add what they can, be it big or small. The conversation starters that have generated the most feedback by far are our ‘Destination Needlework Adventures’. Fasten your seat belts as we take you on a trip around the world, reliving the destinations we’ve visited over the last 49 issues of Embroidery News . . .

Austria
France
Italy
Japan
London
Morocco
Poland
Portugal
Singapore
South Korea
Spain
USA
Vietnam

These destinations have inspired us and enticed us to make our travel bucket lists just that little bit longer!

Do you have a conversation you’d like to start? Whatever the conversation may be – Destination Needlework Adventure or other – email your conversation starter to embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au and we’ll put it to our incredibly engaged and generous Embroidery News Community and see if we can point you in the right direction. We look forward to the conversations yet to come and the amazing discoveries we’ll make together with you.

QUOTE:

Having compiled a list of 49 quotes, choosing just one to feature proved a task harder than we’d initially thought, but we ended up settling on the quote from EN 31 because it speaks of having a spirit of excellence and always enjoying the labours of our needle working hands . . .

" She shops around for the best yarns and cottons, and always enjoys knitting and sewing."
~ Proverbs 31:13 (The Message) ~
