ISSUE 25  |   November 27, 2015

Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome to Embroidery News Issue 25.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating this wonderful event this week. We’ll hold off on the turkey jokes and just say we trust you can squeeze a little stitching time in and around what is hopefully some quality family time.

As promised this week we are officially launching the ‘Beating Around The Bush2016 catalogue right here in Embroidery News. So with a big flashing neon sign we can officially declare the catalogue is OUT NOW! See below for all the details.

In other news this week, the ‘Can You Help’ team really does help by solving the needle threader mystery, Sue has something special you can do with lavender & rice (and it has nothing to do with cooking), and a magical fairy comes to visit our office.

All that and so much more!

Do you have something you can share with the Inspirations community? We’d love to hear from you, please email us at

INSPIRATIONS MAGAZINE UPDATE

The needlework community has been very generous in their praise for Inspirations issue #88 and we are humbled by your kind words. Susan O’Connor and her team have done an outstanding job putting this issue together, as of course have the contributors who make the magazine possible. Congratulations all round.

This week we’re admiring the project from issue #88 ‘Harmonies’ by Deborah Love.

Many of you will be familiar with the visual puzzles that come out from time to time where you are encouraged to stare at a picture in the hope your eyes will magically reveal a second image which is at first hidden or obscured. The project ‘Harmonies’ is a little bit like that – looking at this graceful Deerfield pillow sham at first, one sees a fanciful bouquet of flowers. Now look againthis time thinking of something Christmas related… see it yet?

Ok – it might be a bit of a stretch, but when considering the inclusion of this project in the Inspirations Christmas issue, some of the team thought the flower design forms the triangular shape of a Christmas tree, so it was given a Christmas tick albeit somewhat subliminal. That said for those creative ones among us, the design could easily be adapted to become a floral Christmas tree, should you wish.

Either way, Deborah has created such a beautiful project it would enhance anyone’s house however it was applied.

If you are yet to purchase a copy of Inspirations issue #88, single copies are available here or never miss an issue by becoming a subscriber here.

*Deborah Love is coming to BATB 2016, and if you liked her project above, you’ll love the project ‘Rhapsody in Blue Deerfield Cushion’ from issue #56 which she will be teaching along with two other gorgeous lace projects. Check out the BATB 2016 catalogue here for more details.

CAN YOU HELP?

Last week’s issue of Embroidery News encouraged you to join in on two new conversations – ‘Destination Travel Singapore’ & ‘Instruction Needle Threader’.

by koekoek via etsy.com

We are yet to hear from anyone who is able to point Rachael Willis in the direction of Singapore based embroidery and/or textile places of interest where she can gather supplies, inspiration and get a feel for the local craft and embroidery scene. However we have our fingers crossed that this will be the week someone in the Embroidery News Community jumps in just in time for Rachael’s trip to Singapore in early December. If that’s you, please email us at
embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au

Laura Preller went one step further than simply joining in on our ‘Instruction Needle Threader’ conversation – she provided some original instructions!

Thank you Laura what an amazing find! Catherine, we do hope this helps to figure out how to use your mum’s needle threader - we wish you luck and look forward to hearing how you go.

This week’s conversation starter comes from Genevieve Robbins who remembers her grandmother having a nondescript box of starch in her pantry. Genevieve is hoping someone will join in on her conversation by helping with advice on what to buy, where to buy it and how to use it!

We look forward to passing on your suggestions on how to starch an item not only for Genevieve, but the Embroidery News Community as a whole. Send your answers and any new questions to embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au

SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH SUE

Do you have lavender in your garden? What about rice in your kitchen cupboard? This week Sue has chosen a project that puts both of these ingredients to good use!

‘Lavender Reverie’ by Heather Moody from Issue 41 is a brilliant entry level project using three very popular stitches – Bullion knot, detached chain and stem stitch. For those of you who have our book A-Z of Embroidery Stitches, this is a perfect project to use the instructions for these stitches outlined in the book, in a practical application. ‘Lavender Reverie’ also features a tassel, the technique for which is, again, quick and easy. What’s more the materials needed for the project are inexpensive, readily available and easily interchangeable to suit what you may already have on hand.

Once complete you fill it with rice to use it as a book or paper weight or with lavender from your garden to add a lovely perfume to your room.

So many people made this project as gifts – in fact I remember it was a popular thank you present for teachers at the end of school year. I’m not sure if this was because everyone had lavender in their gardens they wanted to use or maybe an oversupply of rice!?’

Thank you Sue, another great selection. If you are interested in making this project, please see below for details on how to purchase printed copies of Inspirations #41 – Rice and lavender not included!

WHAT ARE YOU STITCHING

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la, Tis the season to be jolly’ and so it is we continue with our ‘Christmas Stitching Spectacular’ theme and this week bring you the very first completed project from the current issue of Inspirations #88.

Carmo Afonso from New South Wales, Australia must have been stitching up a storm these past few weeks, only one month since the first issue of #88 was dispatched and she has already completed this beautiful Christmas piece featuring the project ‘Prancer’.

‘I have just finished my Christmas table runner with both designs from Trish Burr - I just love her designs! Merry Christmas’

Thank you for sending this in Carmo, well done for finishing it so quickly and yes we love Trish’s design as well - and we especially love your elegant table runner, it’s just gorgeous.

Speaking of gorgeous, Piera Tavano has created these lace Christmas decorations for us to admire:

‘Hi, I am new to Inspirations Magazine and till now I have only been able to take a glimpse of the wonderful projects you feature. Here are some photos of my recent Christmas project, I hope you like it. I am truly looking forward to going through my first copy of the magazine page by page as I cosily sit by the fire. Sorry, I forgot to say that I live in Italy, and while in Australia I believe it is summer, here we are waiting for the snow.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas. Piera Tavano’

Piera these are beautiful – simple, yet engaging designs with just the right use of gold thread and ribbon to add that extra Christmas sparkle. Well done.

Now to a collection of projects by Patricia Hewitson who has benefitted from living in two countries well known for great needle artisans – South Africa and the UK:

‘My journey from cross stitch to now a wide variety of embroidery styles, happened as a result of meeting up with a zany group of ladies when I moved home and retired. They introduced me to Inspirations and Smocking and Embroidery and encouraged me to try different forms of embroidery.’

‘Whilst in South Africa I also belonged to the Knysna Embroiderers Guild and now, having moved yet again, this time to the UK, I have found another wonderful group of sharing women of the Exeter Embroiderers Guild.

Being somewhat of a Facebook addict I joined the Hand Embroidery lovers page, becoming involved in the ATC (Artist Trading Cards) swaps. So here are some of my ATCs and one of my smocked dresses. Best wishes - Patricia Hewitson’

Thanks Patricia, we are loving the fun and cheerful ATC’s you created and your smocked dress looks like it just leaped out of the pages of AS&E. You have certainly learned some excellent needlework skills in your travels!

Lesley Janet from Shellharbour, New South Wales, Australia is someone else who possess some excellent needlework skills, clearly demonstrated in the photos of her projects below:

‘I took my first embroidery class in 2002 and I've been hooked ever since. I joined the Embroiderers Guild of N.S.W a few years later when my confidence grew. I like to do workshops with my favourite tutors - Margaret Light, Allison Snepp and Effie Mitrofanis who are all guild tutors. I attend three different embroidery groups each week with lovely ladies in them all. Embroidery is very therapeutic. Smocking is also a passion of mine, I've been making smocked coat hangers for years with a pattern from an early magazine. I have included a photo of a purse I created which has been adapted from the Margaret Light project ‘Tres Belle’ which appeared in Inspirations issue #84. Also, I have sent in another Margaret Light project I stitched at a workshop with her called ‘Briar Rose and Honeysuckle’. Lesley.’

Thank you Lesley, your work is really exquisite and these projects are just divine.

Our final piece for this week is something really different. Before you read the designer’s notes below, have a look at the photos and see if you can have a guess as to her subject matter…

‘I am a lab manager and part of my job is shipping viruses that are created and designed in my lab to different universities around the world, including Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.’

‘This is a picture of a small embroidery project I recently finished. As I work full time I don't have too much time for crafts but I do what I can. This project is of a virus entry, transport and spread in the NS and it was a front cover for a birthday booklet for my boss who is the professor at Princeton University and researches viruses. My best regards, Halina Staniszewska’

How did you go? Did you guess Halina had stitched the story of a virus? No?? Halina there are so many things to love about this piece you created. Firstly it just shows that anyone can stitch something about anything! There truly are no boundaries when it comes to the needle and thread. Secondly what a unique and novel gift to present someone in the field of science, we’re sure your professor loved it!

What are you stitching? Send us your photos, details about your project, where you live and a little about yourself to: embroiderynews@inspirationsmagazine.com.au

And now for an interlude…. a beautiful Fairy graced our offices with her presence this week, and we were lucky enough to snap a picture to show the world that yes, Fairies are real!
