ISSUE 121 | DECEMBER 22, 2017

Hi <<First Name>>,

The Wonder of The Stitch…

Many of us will gather with family and friends in the coming days and weeks for the festivities this time of year brings.

It’s wonderful to have an occasion such as Christmas to draw us together, enjoy a meal, share the latest instalment of our life stories, ponder the true meaning of Christmas, and reflect on all the good in life that we have to be thankful for.

And what gratitude us needle artisans have when we consider the wonder of the stitch.

In theory it’s such a simple action – a threaded needle gliding through fabric, then back again and repeat – yet it’s oh so much more than that!

The wonder of the stitch is such that it has the power to bring us together, create a common bond among strangers, draw out raw passion from within us and ignite our being in a way few other pursuits can.

All of us at Inspirations are so grateful for the privilege of celebrating the wonder of the stitch with all of you throughout 2017. With this, our last newsletter until next year, we want to thank all the needlework fans out there who bring us joy simply by sharing in the wonder of needlework together.

Until 2018… Merry Stitchmas!

ALL TIED UP! – INSPIRATIONS #94

Our final project from Inspirations #94 to be released as a digital pattern is All Tied Up! by Gioja Ralui.

'All Tied Up!' lives up to its name with the clever use of grosgrain ribbon to elegantly tie four sides of a tray together and form a gorgeous container suitable for just about any purpose.

The design featured in ‘All Tied Up!’ is created entirely using only one stitch - Sardinian knot stitch. Further, it is all worked using one strand of thread and is all worked in the hand, without the need for a hoop or frame.

The digital pattern for ‘All Tied Up!’ is out now, plus limited stock of the Ready-to-Stitch Kits are still available.

CHANGES TO OUR NEWSLETTER IN 2018

At Inspirations we have a HUGE year planned for 2018 including celebrating some significant milestones and raising the bar yet again by publishing the world’s most beautiful needlework, even more beautifully than ever before!

More about all that when we return next year, but there is one change we wanted to tell you about ahead of time. During the Christmas/New Year break ‘Embroidery News’ will be undergoing a makeover and when the newsletter returns on January 26th it will have a new design and a new name.

Issue 122 of our newsletter will be the launch of Inspirations ‘All Stitched Up!’.

Why A New Name?

Needlework is a progressive and evolutionally artform and we believe our publications should be equally so. Inspirations ‘All Stitched Up!’ will essentially be the same format as you have enjoyed with Embroidery News, only celebrating even more forms of hand needlework. Plus, we’ll seek to further expand, and give greater voice to, the broader global needlework community and deliver everything ‘All Stitched Up!’ direct to your inbox for your reading pleasure every Friday, per usual.

So be sure to check your email or our website on January 26th for the new and improved newsletter ‘All Stitched Up!’ and in the meantime, if you have any suggestions for what you would like in your weekly newsletter, let us know – we’d love to get your input.

WHAT ARE YOU STITCHING?

Nicola Jarvis is well known for her beautiful embroidery which often features ornate birds, animals and flowers, many of which are inspired by iconic designers and distinctive period styles.

‘Fox and Willow’ by Nicola Jarvis – BATB 2018

This week’s EN has showcased some of Nicola’s gorgeous birds and now we get to enjoy some more feathered friends created by the needles and threads of our very own stitching community…

JAN MAY | AUSTRALIA

‘I am very new to embroidery, but have previously created designs in cross stitch, art and parchment. I was browsing online and came across Trish Burr and her Needle Painting Embroideries. I have bought two of her books and they are surely an inspiration to me! These pieces are my first attempts using her technique.’

‘I live in Tasmania and workshops are few and far between so am self-taught with books and YouTube being my main source of information, but having found you will now seek out Inspirations Magazine!’

Jan, we’re so glad you found us and we do hope Inspirations can become a regular part of your stitching inspiration going forward. Your foray into needle painting has produced some spectacular results and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

JANE PAGE | UK

‘I have always loved crafts, but have found my own niche with embroidery, preferring to design my own items rather than just using kits. I love upcycling and often buy picture frames, or in this case this rather lovely turned wooden pincushion base for the owl. I keep them until I suddenly find inspiration - usually from my garden or the countryside around me. Once the idea is in my head I just have to start working on it!’

Jane, we’ve enjoyed many a bird that’s been created from your needle and thread, but this is the first three-dimensional piece we’ve seen from you and we just love it! We can’t wait to see what inspires you next.

JUNE FELT | AUSTRALIA

‘A friend of mine takes the most wonderful photos of birds as well as whatever native animals or insects she sees on her morning walks. The photo below is an Eastern Parrot that was taken in Armidale, New South Wales and is one of the first photos I received from her.’

‘Since receiving her photo I have tried to reproduce it with needle and thread. I have to admit it has taken me some time to complete as it is not easy trying to copy God's creation!’

June, it may not have been easy, but you have absolutely done justice to God’s creation. Your piece is simply picture perfect!

KAREN FRASER | US

‘When I received Inspirations #96, I wondered if I started stitching straight away, could I finish one of the projects by Christmas? Well… I did!

I love your magazine and, of course, Trish Burr. Thank you for all the Inspiration and Merry Christmas to all of the staff.’

Karen, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of setting yourself a stitching goal and then achieving it! You set yourself an ambitious timeline, but Christmas 2017 will be all the richer as you enjoy Trish Burr’s Partridge in A Pear Tree created from your own needle and thread.

If you would like to make your own Partridge in A Pear Tree, why not start now for Christmas 2018! Ready-to-Stitch Kits are still available on backorder, but with limited stock you'll have to be quick!

KAREN MARSHALL | NEW ZEALAND

‘This is a diary I made and now use every day. The cover is a Steampunk Penguin created with modern materials, using Goldwork techniques. I designed and printed the inside pages myself, as I always find that store bought diaries aren't quite what I’m looking for.

I never seem to get such things organised around Christmas either, so my diary runs Mar to Feb. I find this very useful as a lot tends to happen over Dec and Jan, so having both those months in one diary makes my life a lot easier!’

‘The diary is bound using Perle 5 threads with a book binding technique I learned at the Wanaka Embroidery School. Thanks for the great reading both in Embroidery News and Inspirations Magazine.’

Karen, we love that you’ve sacrificed neither form nor function in something that you use every day! Your diary is equally as cleverly designed as it is useful.

NARELLE HODSON | AUSTRALIA

We close this week’s WAYS with a timely combination… birds and Christmas!

‘After I had finished the lovely little birds with their wonderful characteristics from Jenny McWhinney’s Chatterbox, I wondered what I could do with it. As my eight-year-old granddaughter is showing an interest in stitching I have bought her her own sewing basket for Christmas and because she showed an interest in the birds while I was sewing it, I decided I would cover the lid with it.’

‘It came up a treat and with the leftover piece I made a needle case. Now onto a bird pincushion and scissor fob maybe?! I hope she enjoys it and we can spend some time sewing together during the upcoming school holidays. Thanks everyone for your wonderful publication.’

Narelle, what a practical and thoughtful gift! We love that you’re encouraging the next generation of stitchers and we look forward to seeing what you create together with needle and thread over the coming weeks.

If you’d like to create your own version of Jenny McWhinney’s Chatterbox, printed copies of Inspirations #93 are still available for purchase . . .

Inspirations issue #93 includes all the information you need, along with step-by-step instructions, requirements list and full-size pattern sheet.
