Beautiful – Naturally!
Inspirations Issue #87 is officially out next week and as always it’s truly beautiful! By now the majority of our subscribers have already received their copies and have begun enjoying this gorgeous issue, aptly titled ‘Natural Beauty’.
The theme for #87 is to showcase designs which have been inspired by the splendour of the natural world, cleverly depicted in thread. With so much in this issue to unpack, we’ll feature one project at a time in the coming issues of Embroidery News to give those of you who haven’t subscribed or purchased a copy, a taste of what you are missing, and for those lucky enough to have a copy, a little something extra.
Firstly let’s have a look back at some of the teaser images we provided a few weeks ago and reveal what projects they belong to:
The project featured on the front cover of Issue #87 is Briar Rose and was crafted by the very talented Julie Kniedl. Over the 20+ years Inspirations has been in publication, many needlework artisans have been discovered and their work ushered into the embroidery limelight through the pages of the magazine for us all to enjoy and admire.
Julie is a recent and upcoming member of this fraternity as we first met Julie through one of our stitching competitions. Her entry in BATB 2014 ‘Stitch Your Heart Out’ was so outstanding, Julie took out the competition and was awarded the grand prize of a complete set of Au Ver a Soie, Soie d’Alger silk threads valued at over AUD$3,500.

Since bursting on the scene at Beating Around The Bush, Julie has been hard at work creating gorgeous needlework, specialising in 3D stitching – the art of bringing still things to life in thread, as is demonstrated in her remarkable Briar Rose project and the stunning Succulent Spool.
Our editor Susan is currently working on a profile of Julie to include in a future issue of the magazine, so watch this space for more about this amazing needle artisan. |
Below are a few behind the scenes snaps from the Briar Rose photo shoot, the project itself is so stunning only minimal props were required. However Susan did ensure every rose petal was perfectly placed and the studio smelt divine! No petals were harmed during the making of these photos….

The release date for Inspirations #87 on Zinio was delayed due to a technical issue and we do apologies for this. Zinio subscribers should receive notification to download #87 in the next few days.
ISSUE #88 | CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
It seems crazy to talk about the next issue of inspirations already and even crazier to mention Christmas in August. However Issue #88 will be a magical Christmas spectacular and we want to ensure it arrives in plenty of time for everyone to stitch up a storm for the festive season. For this reason Issue #88 will be dispatched to subscribers in late October. PayPal invoices are being issued for #88 now and subscribers will be notified via email that credit card billing will occur around the middle of September.

Smocking has been a big part of the Country Bumpkin journey over the years, and we know there are many smockers out there who are longing for some new projects to be published. This week two ladies share with us some of their recent smocking projects for your enjoyment:
Judith Crabtree from Gladstone, Queensland Australia is a serial smocker – a self-confessed addict in fact. She had so many projects to send us, we could have filled an entire issue of Embroidery News. Here are six we selected and a note from Judith about her work below….
I have selected several things that I have done so far since June this year. I am a smocking addict for sure and my days aren’t complete without some smocking being done each day....I have every issue (1-100) of Australian Smocking & Embroidery and also of the Inspirations Magazines.

Lydia Greenfield doesn’t let 16,000 kilometres (9,9400 miles) get between her and her granddaughter. From where Lydia lives in Australia, she fills her days smocking gorgeous dresses for her granddaughter in Italy, until she hand delivers them on her visits. Here’s Lydia’s story:

‘Just thought you might like to see what I have been making to take to my granddaughter in Italy. The link over the distance has been, from when she was very young, the love of the dresses I send or bring.
Her absolutely favourite dress is the blue ‘Emily’ one shown below. She hasn’t seen this new one I’ve just finished yet. My granddaughter is now 9 and is old enough for me to teach her how to embroider. We will be doing long stitch when I visit in a few days and maybe someday she will smock too.’ |
What an amazing legacy you are giving your granddaughter Lydia – I’m sure there are many reading this who share a similar bond with their grandchildren, or long for the same opportunity you have, of imparting your needlework skills onto the next generation.
Some of you may be wondering what Norma’s husband has been up to recently, well we nearly had to bring him in to help Jane Page from Suffolk in the UK finish a ‘project in progress’ she emailed us about. Amazingly however, in the 2 short weeks Jane first emailed us to now, she has not only completed her project, but finished another similar one. So Norma’s husband had the week off, but watch out for a special message from him next week. In the meantime, here’s more about Jane:
I decided to make a Flower Carrier & needed some inspiration for my crinoline lady. On the 23rd July of this year I searched through some very old transfers and came across one from 'Woman’s Life' 23rd July 1932. |

Such a coincidence with it being 82 years to the day, I just had to adapt it for my own design. I got a bit carried away with it in the end and also turned it into Little Bo Peep! One of these days I will do the full design with the garden of flowers - have some ideas forming about combining it with ribbon embroidery - just a matter of having time to do everything! Inspirations Issue #86

‘I received my very first subscriber copy of Inspirations (issue 86) and was amazed to see the article on foolproof crazy quilting as that is exactly what I have been working on for the last couple of months! I fell in love with Jennifer's book and have thoroughly enjoyed doing this project, which is almost finished now. I attend an embroidery group in the UK called Charnwood Threads and have been embroidering for 4 1/2 years now. Another member of the group gave me a back copy of your magazine with gold work frogs (as she knew I love both frogs and gold work) and I liked the magazine so much that I have become a subscriber. I am looking forward to my second edition.’ |

Thank you Jessica and it is so interesting to see how you borrowed from the new craze of ‘grown up’ colouring in and adapted that to Embroidery. It’s intriguing to learn where everyone’s inspiration comes from, other than from Inspirations magazine of course! We’ve been wondering if in fact some of our embroidery designs could go the other way and become colouring-in books!

Further to Joan’s request to connect with other stitchers in Alaska, Paula from Manitoba in Canada has suggested the online forum, ‘Stitchin Fingers’ (Click Here) as well as The Embroiderers’ Association of Canada who do have some American members – visit the EAC’s home page is here. Sara from California, who is an active member of EGA’s Greater Pacific Region informed us that although the Alaskan chapter is not currently active, there is a thriving population of stitchers who can be found through the EGA’s Cyber Stitchers & the GPR’s Pacific Chapter - Visit here. Sara also let us know that Marie from Long Island can find like-minded stitchers through the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (Visit here) by entering her zip code in ‘Locate a Chapter’.
